Diego Revisited

I just finished this 4K render of my latest portrait using an alternative lighting setup. It took about 20 hours to complete. I am sharing detail shots from the actual size, so you can see the work that went into it. I am also sharing a 4-view shot, showing the model under different lighting setups. I like doing those to be able to evaluate the nuances in the forms, to make sure things are consistent across different lighting situations.

As usual, every detail was hand sculpted/hand painted in ZBrush, using HD geometry. No scans or commercial displacement/alpha packages were used. More than anything, this is an idealization, with no direct reference used. The intention is to emulate "life", not necessarily reflect "perfection" in any way.

Maya for base meshes, ZBrush for sculpting and painting, Arnold for rendering.

This portrait was started during the last online class on digital portraiture that I taught at the end of last year. As I mentioned before, due to depression and family issues, it was put on hold for all those months, until I finally finished it by putting another 3 weeks of work besides what was done during the class. This pre-recorded class will be available at https://www.flyonthewall.studio in the next few days, together with the announcement for my next live class, happening in September.

Stay tuned for the announcement by following my IG account https://www.instagram.com/theantropus/
